Padma Parvati Lakshmi was born on September 1, 1970, in Chennai, India. Her parents divorced at the age of two. Her mother fled India to avoid the stigma of divorce in India and emigrated to the United States. Lakshmi was a part of her grandparents from Chennai for two years before joining her mother in the United States. Her parents divorced, and she has two younger siblings. Lakshmi is a descendant of the Hindu goddess of prosperity and wealth She grew up in New York City and Los Angeles. She went to India each year for a few months to visit her family. Padma Lakshmi discovered acting was something she enjoyed in 1999. Her first film role was in Figlio di Sandokan (an Italian pirate film).
